Bogányi Gergely

Gergely Bogányi began playing the piano at the age of four in his hometown of Vác, where his first teacher was Katalin Szabó. At six, he received a special prize at the National Piano Competition in Nyíregyháza (1980), which he went on to win at the age of nine (1983). His exceptional talent was already recognized there by Klára Máté, a member of the jury and professor at the Academy of Music.

At the age of ten, in 1984, he was admitted to the “Special Talents Class” of the Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he studied first with Klára Máté, later with Zsuzsa Esztó, and finally with László Baranyay at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In 1993, as a scholarship student of the Sibelius Academy in Finland, he continued his studies in the United States at Indiana University, working with György Sebők, and in Helsinki with Professor Matti Raekallio. He later returned to the U.S. to perform at Indiana University with violinist Barnabás Kelemen.

He performs regularly in Transylvania and has appeared in some of the world’s most renowned concert halls. His repertoire includes more than thirty piano concertos and a substantial part of the piano literature. A major highlight of his career was his 2010 Chopin anniversary concert series, during which he performed all of Chopin’s works for solo piano over two consecutive days.

Among his numerous awards are First Prize at the Budapest International Liszt Piano Competition (1996), the Liszt Prize (2000), the Kossuth Prize (2004), and several honorary citizenships. His discography includes recordings of Mozart concertos, Chopin and Liszt piano works, Chopin and Rachmaninov cello sonatas, and Liszt’s complete works for violin and piano. He is also the creator of the internationally acclaimed Bogányi piano.
